Shipping containers can be useful in a vast number of applications. But perhaps their most common use these days is providing a safe and secure workshop for tools and equipment on construction sites, mining sites, and various agricultural properties.

Why are shipping containers perfect as worksite lock-ups and workshops for tools and equipment? Read on to find out.

Complete Protection Against the Elements

Protecting your worksite tools and equipment from various environmental conditions is of paramount importance. Cold or hot temperatures can cause severe damage to your equipment, but not as much as moisture.

What if your equipment and tools come in contact with water from heavy rain or a flood? What if you have electrical equipment on your worksite? Water can cause an electrical fire, as it is a natural conductor of electricity.

Any harsh weather can wreak havoc on your temporary workshop, causing permanent damage to all your tools and equipment.

All of this is why it is vital to protect your equipment and tools from the elements. Shipping containers can provide the best possible protection, but you need to make sure you find the right containers for your needs.

You should find durable and robust shipping containers that can stand the test of time. You need to ensure that they are completely watertight so that they don’t ever let any water in.

It is also crucial that they have corrosion-resistant steel bodies to prevent rust and any other damage from oxidation.

Last but not least, you should find properly ventilated containers that can effectively keep moisture away and fight condensation. Fortunately, you can easily find containers with proper insulation, ventilation, dehumidifiers, and air conditioning.

Heavy-Duty Lock Box as Theft Protection

The tools, equipment, and various other work supplies that people use on construction or mining sites are often desirable targets for thieves. Those tools and different types of equipment are usually costly, compelling criminals to look for ways to steal them.

You certainly can’t afford to have someone break into your worksite and steal all that valuable stuff from your temporary workshop. You would need to spend a lot of money to purchase the necessities again, and you would deal with downtime that disrupts your entire work project. This means higher costs, worker dissatisfaction, and a massive dent in your bottom line.

You may have insurance, but it wouldn’t cover all your financial losses. Your uninsured costs may be higher than the amount your particular insurance covers.

Thieves are especially active during the holidays, on weekends, and during nighttime, when construction workers are not on their job site. So, how can you protect your valuables when you’re not around? The answer lies in shipping containers.

If you find a sturdy container with a steel body, it would be impossible for someone to try and break it. However, locking it may not be enough to stop thieves from trying to open it.

So, don’t make yourself an easy target. Get a container that is fitted with a heavy-duty lock-box that is completely tamper-proof. With that kind of protection, all of your valuables will always remain safe and secure.

Protection from Vermin

Many storage facilities focus on providing excellent protection against theft, vandalism, and weather elements, but completely overlook the possible threat of vermin.

What if rodents or insects get into your storage unit? Even if you try and protect all your tools and equipment with plastic wraps or bags, that wouldn’t be enough in case of rodent infestation. Rodents would eat through the plastic.

And it’s not only equipment damage that you should worry about, but also contamination. Rats carry dangerous diseases, so you don’t want them contaminating your workshop.

This is yet another reason why shipping containers are excellent solutions for securing worksites and workshops for tools and equipment.

With a high-quality container on your job site, you won’t have to lose sleep over vermin getting into your storage unit, causing damage to all its valuable contents, and bringing in any disease.

Shelves, Ramps, and Other Modifications for Organization and Maximum Convenience

Keeping your tools and equipment well-organised is essential for worksite efficiency and effectiveness.

With shipping containers, you can easily store and organise everything, from safety hats, gloves, and glasses to all your hand tools, power tools, and various pieces of larger equipment.

This is because you can add shelves, ramps, pipe racks, and a lot of other modifications to organise your temporary workshop. You can add them anytime you need, without causing downtime or any kind of a mess.

These modifications are adjustable, removable, and very easy to install. You can make sure they are heavy-duty as well so that they securely hold all your tools.

Worksite Safety

The safety of your workers should be your number one priority during any construction project. Taking the necessary worksite safety measures will help you reduce the risk of accidents and injuries.

One of those safety measures includes properly organising and putting away all your tools and equipment. By enabling you to organise your tools seamlessly, shipping containers immediately improve the safety of your workers. They help you create a safe work environment where everyone can perform their tasks completely hassle-free.

Equipment Storage That Can Be Relocated

If you store your tools and equipment in a particular storage facility or permanent warehouse, you would need to transport them regularly to your worksite. This is not very efficient and cost-effective.

With shipping containers, you can quickly and easily move your tools when you need to relocate to another site. Their mobility and ease of transport provide the flexibility and convenience that no type of permanent storage does.

Easy Loading and Unloading

Loading and unloading all the tools and pieces of equipment you need for a job can often be very time-consuming. If you transport them to your worksite using trucks, for instance, it would take a lot of time for you to both load and unload them every single day during the construction project.

This is not the case with shipping containers. Since they sit directly on the ground, loading and unloading them is an absolute piece of cake. It’s an easy, quick, convenient, and very cost-effective process.

This October, the Happy Turtle Café landed in the Happy Valley providing Caloundra locals and visitors with coffee, house baked goods, vibrant salads, sandwiches, Açai bowls, cold pressed juices and smoothies.

In collaboration with Murphy Builders and the Sunshine Coast Council, GeoBox Pty Ltd were commissioned to convert one of our 20ft High Cube shipping containers into this sustainable fully functioning kitchen café.

Our modifications team got to work fitting out the container with fully insulated walls and stainless steel interiors. GeoBox Pty Ltd modifications included:

  • Two awnings – one constructed from standard panel and the second a tailor made glass awning
  • Full stainless steel fit out including bench tops, sinks, shelving and range hood with extractor
  • Customised flooring
  • Customised electrical fit out to cater for coffee machines, fridges, ovens, fryers etc
  • Customised plumbing fit out

Once all the modifications were complete, local Caloundra artists; Thom and Marni Stuart, painted the container with a mural inspired by Pumicestone Passage surrounding the Happy Valley. This artwork combined with the beautifully painted signage by Happy Turtle Café operator Chloe Donaldson, has created a great addition to the Happy Valley landscape.

Now running this exciting new venture, Chloe Donaldson is no stranger to health, hospitality and the Happy Valley. Chloe was the manager of the Happy Valley Coffee Van, a popular and well-loved business run by Rob Muston. After 15 years parked by the seaside, Rob served his last coffee from the van this August, handing over the baton to Chloe to continue a friendly and community-driven service.

Chloe is also studying Naturopathy and aims to provide an environmentally friendly business with healthy food and recyclable initiatives as well as remaining produce being given to the homeless.

GeoBox Pty Ltd are extremely proud to have been a part of this new Caloundra business and we wish Chloe and her team all the best for the future!

The GeoBox Pty Ltd team were recently briefed with a complex but exciting project for Bond University. They required AFL home & away team facilities to be installed on their AFL grounds in Robina.

Using four new 20ft high cube containers, our team constructed two stacked structures complete with stairs, landing and awning. The bottom containers were designed as a players seating area, offering shade and shelter. These containers were secured to the ground using the Surefoot anchoring system provided by BMSA, with top containers locked in using twist locks.

The top containers were built for the purpose of housing the team’s coaches. Our modifications team installed insulation, air-conditioning and electrical, complete with a wrap-around window for a good view of the game.

Once on site and in place, GeoBox Pty Ltd then fitted the rear stairs, landing and awning.

It was by no means an easy project, with tight deadlines and a challenging window design. But the end result was well worth the hard work!

Mackay Regional Council approached us last year to help develop facilities for their multi-sport venue Sugar Bowl Mackay, a Skate Park and Youth Plaza to be open and free to the public.

“The concept behind the mobile shipping containers was to develop a space suitable for events, clubs, groups and Council staff” explains Jim Carless, Major Projects Manager for Mackay Regional Council.

“The container needed to store kits and equipment at the facility, so workshop mentors and coaches could carry out regular sessions without transporting equipment. The location is in a road reserve, so with the possibility of a future connection road being built, we opted for the transportable solution of shipping containers.”

The brief was to provide two separate spaces. One space was to be used as a first aid/recovery room for events. The second space was to be used as a clubhouse, workshop and storage space for groups.

Our team provided comprehensive drawings and plans before getting to work on the modifications. Works included openings for doors and awnings, flooring and insulated wall panels. We also fitted out shelving, lighting and power points. The site electrician then simply connected mains power to the sub-boards provided by us.

“The whole process was very simple and effective, we would definitely recommend GeoBox Pty Ltd for future conversions.”

Whilst our general purpose containers are great for temporary or long term storage, we understand that sometimes businesses need a permanent space that is unique to their specific storage requirements. An example of this, is a project we completed for Followmont Transport.

After finding us on Facebook, Followmont enquired about purchasing 2 containers, one for storage and one for supplementary workshop purposes. They had a rough idea of what they required but to help them visualise their concept more clearly, we got to work designing some container modifications to suit. Our team provided Followmont with some detailed drawings of what their customised shipping containers would look like.

“The whole process was exceptionally simple,” explains Cassie Eivers, Project and Property Manager at Followmont Transport. “GeoBox Pty Ltd provided 3d drawings of the finished product once we had made the selections so we could see exactly what we are getting.”

Once approved, we carried out modifications on 2 new single use 40’ containers at our Narangba depot. The GeoBox Pty Ltd team added 2 additional sets of doors, lighting, power and ventilation in the roof. We then repainted them and delivered them to their required location. Once onsite, Followmont added an igloo canopy. The containers began being used in September 2018 and are being successfully used in 2019.

“It was a seamless project that delivered exactly what we were after,” adds Cassie.

Yes, you read correctly… helicopter! GeoBox Pty Ltd customer Luke owns and runs a cattle station and needed an on-site, secure, pest proof and cyclone safe storage space for his rotorcraft. Luke provided us with some images of his helicopter along with measurements which allowed our modifications team to get to work on modifying a 40’ container. We raised the roof 300mm and 500mm wide in the centre to ensure the main rotor mast would fit inside the container.

“The whole process was straight forward and quick,” explains Luke. “The pad was set up last month and it’s working great. I would definitely recommend GeoBox Pty Ltd for container modifications and storage.”

We asked Luke if had any advice or tips for others looking to convert a shipping container for storage; “I recommend choosing a white container so it would be a lot cooler in hot weather.”

Another great way to keep a container cool is insulation. Insulation will help in all seasons, keeping the container warm in the cooler months and dry in the damper months. For more information, visit our shipping container insulation blog post.

GeoBox Pty Ltd also provides temporary self-storage solutions which can be a great option for renovations, moving house or storing business or household archives. Find out more on shipping container storage here.

In 2016, we were approached by Unity College with the idea of having an on-site café that brings the local community and their students together, to create new business and learning opportunities. It would also be a place that students, staff and parents could visit throughout the day.

After our initial briefing we went to the drawing board. We used a new 20’ high cube container, adding an awning and side doors. We installed electrical power points and lighting, as well as a split system air-condition unit. The container was then fully insulated and finished with a brick effect feature wall and a polished floor. The biggest challenge we were faced with were the aesthetic features. We don’t often get asked to polish and varnish the floors of our containers, nor to install wood inside of steel doors – but what a great look when they are open!

2 years on and the ‘CoOp @ Unity College’ is thriving! Sat on decking, overlooking the Hospitality and Lecture Theatre facilities, the shipping container café is perfectly placed for staff, students and parents to pass through and stop for their morning coffee. The container even has its own little garden area that welcomes wildlife, fresh flowers and herbs.

The hip little shipping container is the hub for locally sourced products including honey from the College’s own hive of bees. This has created opportunities for students to be part of the honey extraction process as well as designing new bee products and packaging. In October, staff and students will launch their new Bees Wax Food Wraps, a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics and cling wrap. As well as creating the product, students are also involved in the branding and marketing, check out this video on ‘how to create your own’, produced by a Senior student: http://bit.ly/2zu6h04

The CoOp has also provided shift work for Year 12 students who are interested in gaining Barista and customer service skills. The Senior Hospitality students also come up with new initiatives to connect their cooking lessons to the café. They will often sell their meals at the CoOp for lunches, or provide freshly cut ingredients and recipes for customers to take home and cook.

This shipping container conversion concept is open to the whole College too, with Junior students regularly visiting the space for outdoor lessons. Music students are also welcome and provide customers with soothing sounds at lunchtime for the Thursday ‘Thump Sessions’. The musicians come to showcase their talent whilst also helping to create a collaborative and creative space.

Because of innovative work and student focused initiatives like these, Unity College has just been selected as a finalist in the 2018 Sunshine Coast Business Awards in the Education & Training Category.

This GeoBox Pty Ltd conversion is a great example of how you can turn a hollow shipping container in to a fully functioning business. Way to go Unity!

From pools to schools, there are no rules when it comes to the correct use of a shipping container. Choosing the right container for your needs doesn’t have to be tricky with our list of five handy questions by your side.

What do you need the container for?

The only limitation on what a shipping container can be used for is your own imagination. From stunning homes to medical centres, or for additional storage space while you move house, there isn’t much that one of our shipping containers can’t become to help you out when you’re short of space.

Containers make the perfect office space without turning your house into a work environment. They can also be used as portable or permanent shops, hair salons and cafés.

However, if you’re more of a traditionalist, then our containers can also continue be used for shipping your valuable possessions from one part of the country to another, via land or sea, keeping them dry, safe and free from the attention of unwanted nasty visitors (vermin) until they reach their destination.

Easily transported, our containers can hold your valued items either at your location or offsite – offering a much higher level of flexibility than fixed location storage spaces.

What size container do you need?

Our containers come in 6m (20ft) and 12m (40ft) lengths, and standard height and high cube configurations. Our smallest shipping container is a 6m (20ft) standard, this provides 33.2cu/m of space – enough room for the contents of an average three bedroom home.

But if you’re still not sure what size you are going to need, just use our volume calculator, or call us and we’ll help you to decide.

Use our handy shipping container volume calculator to estimate your shipping container size needs.

Do you need to store goods at a consistent temperature or even keep it cold?

We have a range of refrigerated shipping containers that provide the perfect solution for goods that need to be stored or transported at a regulated temperature.

Our refrigerated shipping containers have been specifically chosen by our team of experts for their low power consumption and they are the most environmentally friendly units on the market. We have standard 20′ and 40′ refrigerated shipping containers for hire, and 10′ & 20′ domestic refrigerated shipping containers. These domestic refrigerated shipping containers are fitted with lights, alarms, easy open
doors, flat floors and come as standard with a stainless steel ramp.

Standard and domestic refrigerated shipping containers require three phase power.

Do you need to have your shipping container modified?

Shipping containers are no longer simply about ships. In fact, these days shipping containers can be used for almost any purpose with just a few modifications.

The team at GeoBox Pty Ltd can design and modify any size shipping container, simply tell us what you need and our team will create a solution that meets your demand and your budget.

How long do you need the shipping container for?

Whether for commercial or personal use, the length of time you need the shipping container for (and what modifications you need to make) will ultimately decide if you would be better off buying a unit, or simply hiring one.

Our fleet of hire containers are among the youngest and most diverse in South East Queensland and consist of portable storage units that have only been used domestically within Australia. Our agreements are flexible and competitive and we can often deliver a hire container on the same day that it’s ordered.

However, if your needs determine that you should purchase your very own shipping container then you can rest assured that with us you’re getting the highest standard and latest designs available.

If a used container is more within your budget then we have designed our very own unique grading criteria to help you to choose the right container for your needs. All of our used containers are inspected for damage, structural integrity and aesthetics on arrival at out depot and based on this process we can ensure that we meet your requirements and expectations.

GeoBox Pty Ltd offers an efficient and value for money solution designed to meet your
needs.

The post 10 Ways Shipping Containers Make Festival Planning Easy appeared first on GeoBox Pty Ltd.

Behind every great festival is a shipping container. These hard working steel boxes are the lifeblood of festival logistics.

Shipping containers can:

  1. Easily transport equipment
  2. Act as on-site storage
  3. Be converted into pop-up food stalls and merchandise stands
  4. Have canopies attached for shelter
  5. Form ablution blocks, providing toilets and amenities
  6. Be box offices, information kiosks and site offices
  7. Securely house ATMS
  8. Create barriers, directing the flow of the crowd
  9. Display signage or artwork associated with the event
  10. Form part of the stage infrastructure

1. Equipment Transportation

For touring festivals, transport logistics must be carefully thought out. Shipping containers were designed and made to transport goods, so utilising them makes relocating from one venue to another straightforward. The best part? Once a container arrives at its location it can stay there and serve other purposes, which leads us to…

2. On Site Storage

Shipping containers are secure, weather-proof and vermin-proof, which makes them excellent for storage. Standard 20’ and 40’ containers will usually do the job nicely, but for easier accessibility you may prefer a side-opening container. For temperature-sensitive items, a refrigerated container is the way to go as the temperature can be controlled and set within a -20 to 20 degree celsius range.

3. Pop-Up Food Stalls and Retail Stands

Shipping containers are relatively easy to modify, making them the go-to for hospitality and retail outlets getting on the pop-up band wagon. We can now see shipping container pop-up stores everywhere, but they are especially suited to festivals due to their ease of transport. A container can be fit-out to your specs in either 10’, 20’ or 40’ lengths.

4. Canopies, Domes and Shelters

Container-mounted shelters are versatile, portable, and low maintenance. Well designed and manufactured shelters withstand tough weather conditions, which can be unpredictable and unavoidable when planning an event. Make sure you’re prepared with suitable shelter.

5. Ablution Blocks and Toilets

Ablution blocks or portable toilets are essential at any festival. Shipping containers are easily modified to provide amenities for attendees.

6. Box Offices, Information Kiosks and Site Offices

The box office: it can make or break the festival entry process. Ticketing and entry should run as smoothly as possible, so make sure your box office is up to the task. A shipping container can be designed and modified specifically for this purpose. Containers can also be transformed into information kiosks, site offices, lost-and-found booths, first aid and rest areas… you name it, a shipping container is likely suitable.

7. Portable and Secure ATMs

Shipping containers can safely and securely house ATMs, making them transportable between venues.

8. Barriers

Crowd flow is important, and so is creating a suitable perimeter at the festival venue. The challenge for touring festivals is that the venue layout is likely different at each location. Shipping containers can be strategically placed to create sections and boundaries where required. They can be used “as-is”, or double as storage units or many of the other suggestions listed in this article.

9. Signage and Art Displays

Think of a shipping container as a blank canvas. Its walls can be used to promote your event, display signage and information, or showcase artwork and murals. A fun fact about shipping containers: they can also be stacked to increase visibility or to create a larger ‘canvas’.

10. Stage Infrastructure

Shipping containers can be used to frame a stage, creating infrastructure for the engineering of lighting and visual displays and audio equipment. They can also be used as the stage.

Managing business expenses and cash flow in the early days can have a significant impact on whether a startup takes off or crashes and burns. This is why many young businesses are choosing to utilise shipping containers to minimise costs.

How are startups and small businesses using shipping containers?

To work in

Shipping containers are easily modified to become offices, studios, salons, workshops, and even kitchens.

Many startups begin at home or in the garage as renting a commercial space can be costly with long-term contracts involved.

Use a shipping container:

  • as an office for a quiet work space away from the home and away from distractions
  • for meetings with clients and team members
  • as an art, design, photography or sewing studio
  • as a salon for hairdressers and beauty therapists
  • as a workshop when garage space is limited
  • as a kitchen for pop-up food stalls, catering businesses, or businesses making their own products

To store in

Small businesses often struggle with storage space.

Shipping containers are perfect for storing:

  • Products
  • Materials
  • Tools
  • Equipment
  • Documents
  • Ingredients (talk to us about refrigerated containers as well)
  • Furniture
  • Almost anything else you can think of!

To sell and promote in

Pop-up shipping container retail has taken off with a bang. Large companies are now using pop-up stores to directly connect with customers and influencers to gauge interest in new products, to promote their ranges, to create sales, to generate media interest and to create presence within the market.

Pop-up shops aren’t limited to retail, however. We are also seeing pop-up coffee shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, ticket stalls, show rooms and galleries.

Some well-known brands using pop-up shops include Adidas, Nike, Puma, Tesla, Volvo, Coca-Cola, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Sephora, Ugg, Samsung, Motorola, Nespresso, Aldi, Lego, and many more.

A massive draw-card for pop-up shops is their temporary nature, negating the need for long-term commercial leases. They can also be fit-out off-site, easily transported to your chosen location, and then relocated when needed. This allows businesses to be portable and adaptable while minimising costs.

Customisation

Shipping containers are perfect for modification and customisation as they are essentially blank canvases. We can add doors, windows, ventilation, ramps, power points, lighting, shelving, work benches, and the list goes on. They can be painted and branded to reflect your business. We can also include a lock box for added security.

Enthusiastic up-cyclers are leading the way in alternative architecture and design by recycling used shipping containers as homes and offices, but if you’re not quite ready to live in a shipping container, have you thought about swimming in one? These versatile containers can also be converted into swimming pools at a fraction of the price of a traditional pool. We supply new single use containers to Coolum based Shipping Container Pools who have a range of stylish pools that can be easily customised to sit within your desired location.

Why choose a shipping container pool?
A shipping container pool comes with plumbing, heating and electrical systems already installed which means they are simple and easy to set up. They are relocatable and their exterior is completely customisable as they can be installed above ground. We already know how strong shipping containers are and with the added modification by Shipping Container Pools, these durable and safe pools are perfect for the family home.

Check out this great video from Shipping Container Pools, breaking down the build and elements of their pools.

Examples of Containers being used for pools by big brands
Last year we did some research on how various brands and businesses used shipping container pools for permanent and temporary uses including public events and residential buildings. Here’s what we found…

Tommy Hilfiger Denim – Bread and Butter Fashion Trade Show
This fashion trade show embraced the re-use of shipping containers in a big way, turning heads not only in the world of fashion, but also in the world of cargotecture. The swimming pool, constructed out of modified shipping containers, displays glass panelling and stylish wooden trimming, complimenting the overall industrial yet contemporary look of the show.

Nagel Containerpool
The Containerpool was cleverly designed as a portable pool for events and is almost entirely self sufficient. It includes a filtration system, locker room, electrical connections, and it even monitors and controls pH and chlorine levels. The container has been lined with a 1.5mm reinforced swimming pool liner and features three portholes along each side of the pool. For safety, anti-slip floor mats are used and railings surround the platform.

A shipping container pool in Container City, London, invites locals to take a dip. Unlike the Tommy Hilfiger Denim pool and Nagel Containerpool, this pool has been designed to appear as though it’s in-ground.

Dumpster Pools
Keeping in the spirit of up-cycling, US company Macro-Sea caused quite a stir in Brooklyn when they used dumpsters as swimming pools at a party. The company’s president, David Belt, says that the project was created to experiment with underused space and materials, repurposing them with urban renewal in mind. Not unlike shipping containers, dumpsters are everywhere in the US, and many sit unused.

The dumpsters were cleaned, the bottoms filled with sand for padding, and then they were lined with plastic and fitted with a filtration system, just like on a regular above-ground pool. The main cost was the wooden decking and the water delivery.

Experimenting further with this idea, Macro-Sea got involved with New York’s Summer Streets Program by supplying three dumpster pools for the public to enjoy.

Projects similar to Macro-Sea’s could be easily duplicated using refurbished shipping containers instead of dumpsters as shipping containers are also relatively inexpensive and easy to transport.

Tough Mudder
A little closer to home, the 2016 Tough Mudder on the Sunshine Coast used shipping containers for its infamous ice water bath obstacle, testing the strength of competitors and containers alike as thousands battled through the freezing water-filled shipping containers.
